Preservative efficacy testing, also known as preservative challenge testing, determines the effectiveness of a preservative during its shelf life and evaluates how well a product withstands microbial contamination during use.

Use of a detergent or high-level disinfectant/sterilant that has not been validated by Olympus may be ineffective and can damage the OER reprocessor components, and the endoscopes being reprocessed. Improper use of detergent may cause severe burns and substantial eye injury.
